Observations
Behaviour is watched and recorded, often using tallies. There is no IV in an observation.
Before an observation is conducted, the behaviours must be operationalised so that it is clear what is being observed. The researchers must also decide whether they are doing a time or event sample of the behaviour.
Observations may occur through a one way mirror or by watching a recording.
Structured observations – take place in a set environment, often with a one way mirror
Naturalistic observations – take place in the natural setting
Participant observations – observers are part of what they are observing
Non-participant observations – observers sit away from what
Covert observations – pp’s do not know they are being observed
Overt observations – pp’s are aware they are being observed
