A: To see whether there is a relationship between parental strictness and tidiness. This is based on fixation at the anal stage – anal expulsive personality occurs from being too lenient at the anal stage, whereas anal retentive occurs from being too controlling.
P: Use of a questionnaire. We used a likert scale of strongly agree, agree, not sure, disagree and strongly disagree for questions on tidiness and strictness. An example of strictness included ‘I never had a curfew’ and a question relating to tidiness included ‘I would know if something in my room had been moved’. In total there were 8 questions on tidiness and 8 on strictness. We then used an opportunity sample of 10 pp’s from the 6th form common room.
F: We conducted a spearman’s rho test. The observed value was ............. and the critical value for p= 0.05 was ........... This means our findings were ................. and we accept the ................... hypothesis
Evaluation
Our findings cannot be generalised as we used an opportunity sample in the common room. Findings might be different to other cultures based on effects of upbringing.
All pp’s were asked the same questions which means it is reliable and can be replicated. This was a standardised procedure.
Students may have given socially desirable answers as may be embarrassed if they did have curfews and not give an honest answer. This would make the findings unreliable and not valid.
As we asked pp’s for consent and gave them a brief we met the ethical guidelines. They were given the right to withdraw and no harm would have come to them in this questionnaire.
